James May's Toy Stories is a British television series that celebrates toys and the nostalgia they inspire. It is presented by James May, the former host of Top Gear and is produced by Plum Pictures Limited. In each episode, May investigates a different classic toy, delving into its history, design, and cultural significance. The show blends humor, documentary-style storytelling, and practical experimentation to create a one-of-a-kind viewing experience that's both informative and entertaining.

One episode, titled The Great Train Race, follows May and a team of train enthusiasts as they attempt to build and race the world's first full-size model railway. The task is no easy feat, and the team faces a range of challenges - from sourcing the right materials to securing permits to build on public land. However, their enthusiasm and determination are unwavering, and they set out to create a stunning model railway that will capture the public's imagination.

The show starts with May outlining the ambition for the team - to build a model railway that spans over 10 miles, and to race its trains against a modern train on a British mainline. The task is mammoth, but the team approaches it with a childlike enthusiasm that is infectious. They start by researching the history of model railways, visiting museums and speaking to experts who can help them understand the intricacies of their chosen hobby.

As the team begins to build the railway, May takes on a more hands-on role, helping to lay track and wire up the propulsion system. As he does so, he explains the physics of model railways and how they've evolved over the years. From steam-powered engines to electric ones, the team considers the pros and cons of each technology and makes careful choices about what to use in their own model.

As construction progresses, the team faces a range of challenges, from issues with the track to difficulties securing permission to build on public land. But they remain undaunted and continue to work tirelessly to make their dream a reality. Along the way, they also recruit a range of volunteers, including local schoolchildren and train enthusiasts, who help add the finishing touches to the railway.

Finally, the day of the race arrives, and the team is on tenterhooks as they wait for the challenger train to arrive. When it finally does, the tension is palpable, and everyone watches with bated breath as the two trains race side by side. The outcome is surprising but the journey to get there is truly remarkable, showing the power of teamwork and the sheer joy of tinkering with toys.

Overall, The Great Train Race episode of James May's Toy Stories is a delightful exploration of a much-loved hobby. The show combines education with entertainment, providing insights into the history and technology of model railways while also capturing the excitement and fun of building and racing them. May's enthusiasm is infectious, and viewers cannot help but be drawn into the team's remarkable journey, rooting for them as they overcome obstacles and strive to achieve their goal.

In the first series of James May's Toy Stories, James went on a quest to show what is possible with old-fashioned toys by using them on a scale never seen before. Five toys were successful but one failed - model trains. Now James and his team revisit the doomed challenge and make another attempt at building the longest ever model railway track, nearly ten miles long, linking Barnstaple and Bideford. Will the people of Devon ensure for the first time in a generation, a train (however small) makes the journey between the two towns?
