James May's Toy Stories: Flight Club is a British television show produced by Plum Pictures Limited. The show features James May, the famous British presenter, and his team of engineers, designers and aviation enthusiasts, who come together to build and fly everything from paper planes to giant model gliders. It is a series of three episodes that explore the history, science and engineering behind some of the most iconic toys in aviation history.
In episode one, the team sets out to build a life-sized replica of the Airfix Spitfire model kit. James May and his team head to the South Coast, to the birthplace of the Spitfire, to meet with experts and enthusiasts who share their passion for aviation. With the help of these experts, they begin to work on building the model plane. They face a number of challenges along the way, including sourcing the correct materials and figuring out how to attach the wings to the fuselage. They even build a life-sized cardboard mock-up of the plane to test the design. After numerous setbacks and failures, they finally manage to get the Spitfire in the air, only to discover it has some major flaws.
In episode two, James May and his team get to grips with building giant scale model gliders. They are tasked with building a glider with a wingspan of 100 feet, which they will attempt to fly across the English Channel. They head to the National Gliding Centre in the UK to meet gliding enthusiasts and get hands-on experience with some of the most impressive gliders in the world. They work with a team of gliding experts to construct the giant glider and spend months testing and tuning it before attempting the channel crossing. They face incredibly challenging conditions, but manage to take off and soar over the Channel, even breaking a world record.
In the final episode, James May and his team tackle the challenge of building and flying paper planes. They set their sights on building a paper plane that can fly over 22 miles, breaking the world record for the longest paper plane flight. James May and his team travel all over the UK and Japan to meet with paper plane enthusiasts and discover the secrets of building the ultimate paper plane. They experiment with different designs, weights, and materials before finally coming up with a design that they believe will break the world record. They take the plane to a remote airfield in the Scottish highlands and attempt to break the record. They discover that designing and building the paper plane is only half the battle, and that the weather, wind, and other factors can prove to be enormous challenges.
