ShoBox: The New Generation, which airs on SHOWTIME, is a boxing broadcast that showcases up-and-coming fighters who are looking to make a name for themselves in the sport. The show offers an unmatched opportunity for boxing enthusiasts to watch the next generation of talent that will undoubtedly become champions in the future.
The edition of ShoBox aired on February 2nd, 2018, was a highly anticipated one, as it featured several exciting matchups that promised to deliver thrilling moments. The show was held at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota and was headlined by a fight between Regis Prograis (19-0, 16 KOs) and Juan Jose Velasco (20-0, 12 KOs).
The fight between Prograis and Velasco was set to take place in the light welterweight category, and both fighters were coming in undefeated, which added to the excitement. Prograis was considered the favorite, as he was ranked number 2 in the WBO and was known for his power and speed. Velasco, on the other hand, was a relatively unknown fighter from Argentina, but he had an impressive record and was eager to make a name for himself.
The atmosphere leading up to the main event was electric, and the undercard fights did not disappoint. The first undercard fight was between Rolando Chinea (15-2, 6 KOs) and Kenneth Sims Jr. (12-1, 4 KOs) in the light welterweight division. The fight was a close one, but Sims Jr. managed to edge out Chinea with a majority decision. The second undercard fight was between Antonio Nieves (17-2-2, 9 KOs) and Christian Esquivel (30-13-1, 24 KOs) in the bantamweight category. Nieves dominated the fight and won by a unanimous decision, much to the delight of the crowd.
The main event between Prograis and Velasco was a back-and-forth battle that had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout. Prograis started the fight strong, landing several hard shots to Velasco's head and body. Velasco, though, was not fazed and continued to come forward, throwing punches and trying to close the distance between him and Prograis. Both fighters continued to exchange blows in the second and third rounds, with Prograis landing more of the power shots.
In the fourth round, Velasco started to find his rhythm and was able to land several significant shots on Prograis, who appeared to be tiring. Velasco continued to push forward in the fifth and sixth rounds, but Prograis was able to defend himself and land counter punches that kept Velasco at bay.
The seventh round saw Prograis come back strong, landing several hard shots that looked like they might end the fight. Velasco, though, was able to weather the storm and continued to fight back. Prograis, sensing that Velasco was still dangerous, kept up the pressure in the eighth round and landed a huge shot to Velasco's body that forced him to take a knee.
The end came in the ninth round when Prograis landed a huge shot that sent Velasco to the canvas, ending the fight in spectacular fashion. The win improved Prograis' record to 20-0, and he was hailed as a future star in the sport.
