Chocolate Underground is a TV anime series directed by Tarou Iwasaki and produced by Production I.G based on an English novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. The show centers around two boys, Huntley and Smudger, who live in a world where the consumption of chocolate is strictly prohibited by the local government. The boys, however, are passionate chocolate lovers and are determined to find a way to consume their beloved treat in any way possible.
The series is set in a dystopian future where the government has banned chocolate consumption citing it as unethical and illegal. The government has created a secret police force to ensure that the ban is strictly adhered to, and those caught consuming chocolate are punished severely. Despite the government's efforts, the black market for chocolate products thrives, and those with the right connections can access them.
Huntley and Smudger, two best friends, live in such a society where chocolate is no longer available. However, they are determined to find a way to savour the delicious flavour of chocolate. They come across a map leading to an old chocolate factory that is said to have been shut down years ago after the government imposed the chocolate ban. The duo embarks on a mission to find the long-forgotten chocolate factory and taste the forbidden delicacy for the first time.
Along the way, they meet a girl named Louise, who shares their passion for chocolate. As they continue their search for the factory, they encounter a group of people who refer to themselves as 'chocolatiers' - chocolate lovers who are part of an underground resistance movement that seeks to overturn the government's chocolate ban.
The chocolatiers are integral to the plot of Chocolate Underground, as they are the ones who provide the boys with the tools and knowledge they need to create their own chocolate. Through this, the boys master the art of chocolate-making and begin to sell their creations on the black market.
While chocolate is a significant factor in the series, Chocolate Underground is more than just a story about the love for chocolate. The show highlights themes of rebellion, freedom, and individualism. It showcases how such values can bring about change and pave the way for a better future.
In terms of animation and art, Chocolate Underground is visually stunning. The use of colours and contrast between light and dark adds depth to the scenes and brings the characters to life. The music, composed by Hideki Tanaka, complements the show's visuals and adds to its overall appeal.
Overall, Chocolate Underground is an excellent anime for those who love to indulge in whimsical storytelling and beautiful visuals. While the premise of the show may seem simple, its execution is brilliant. The show's messages about freedom and rebellion are particularly relevant in today's world, making it a must-watch for viewers of all ages.
