To Keep the Light is a 2016 period drama film directed by Erica Fae, who also stars in the movie. Set in the late 1800s, the film tells the story of Abbie, a lighthouse keeper's wife, who is left alone on an isolated Maine island to tend the lighthouse while her husband is away on a supply trip. Abbie is a strong and independent woman who is passionate about her work as a lighthouse keeper. She is dedicated to keeping the light burning, which serves as a warning to sailors of the dangerous rocky coast. As the days go by, Abbie discovers the challenges and beauty of solitude, she starts to explore the island and enjoy the natural surroundings around her.

Her solitude is interrupted when a stranger, a Maine general store owner and boatman, arrives on the island to bring supplies to the lighthouse. Abbie and the visitor, who she learns is named Harker (played by Antti Reini), are initially suspicious of each other but gradually find common ground in their love of the sea and nature.

However, Abbie’s husband, who she had hoped would return, is delayed, and her communication with the mainland is limited, so she has to come to terms with the possibility of being alone indefinitely. As her loneliness becomes intense, Abbie begins to unravel secrets that her husband had been concealing from her.

As Abbie continues to keep the lighthouse, she starts to question the role she plays as a woman in a male-dominated society. Despite facing several challenges to keep the light burning, Abbie remains determined to protect the sailors who risk their lives out at sea.

Throughout the movie, Erica Fae shines as Abbie, delivering a captivating performance that captures the viewer's heart. Antti Reini as Harker also gives an excellent portrayal of a man drawn to the sea, as well as the conflict between the desires of his heart and the duties of his everyday life.

David Patrick Kelly also gives an impressive performance as a grizzled old sea captain who becomes one of Abbie's few connections to the mainland.

A standout feature of the film is the skillfully crafted cinematography by Aaron Hollander. With sweeping shots of the sea, rugged coastlines, and the island's natural beauty, it immerses viewers into the remote and sparsely populated Maine landscape. The lighting is also used to great effect, with the lighthouse beam's constant pulsing shining as a beacon of danger and hope.

To Keep the Light is a beautifully shot and thought-provoking film that explores themes of loneliness, isolation and the relationship between humans and nature. Amidst the serenity of Maine's rugged beauty, Abbie’s struggle for survival shows the indomitable spirit that can keep the human lights burning even in the toughest circumstances.

To Keep the Light is a 2018 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3.
