The strategic bombing of Iraq, described in wartime briefings as a campaign against Baghdad's offensive military capabilities in both wars, now appears to have been broader in its purposes and selection of targets. Amid mounting evidence of Iraq's ruined infrastructure and the painful consequences for ordinary Iraqis, Pentagon officials more readily acknowledge the severe impact of the 43-day air bombardment on Iraq's economic future and civilian population. Their explanations these days of the bombing's goals and methods suggest that the allies, relying on traditional concepts of strategic warfare, sought to achieve some of their military objectives in the Persian Gulf War by disabling Iraqi society at large. This is the story of those missions and the first use of stealth technology and "smart weapons."

On June 7, 1981 eight IAF F-16A fighters covered by six F-15A jets flew in Operation Opera (also referred to as Operation Babylon or Operation Ofra) to bomb and destroy the Iraq nuclear facilities of Osiraq. Among the pilots that took part in the attack was the late Colonel Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut. This episode is also the remarkable story of the 1982 Lebanon War; IAF planes destroyed the Syrian air defenses and shot down 100 Syrian aircraft without losing a single fighter plane in air to air combat. In response to a PLO terrorist attack which resulted in the murder of three Israeli civilians in Cyprus, Operation Wooden Leg took place on October 1, 1985. The strike involved the bombing of PLO Headquarters in Tunis, Tunisia, by F-15 Eagles. This was the longest combat mission ever undertaken by the IAF, a stretch of 2300 kilometers, involving in-flight refueling by an IAF Boeing 707. As a result, PLO headquarters and barracks were either destroyed or damaged.

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) was formed when Israel declared statehood in 1948 and found itself under immediate attack. A variety of obsolete and surplus ex-World War II combat aircraft were quickly sourced by various means to supplement this fleet. The battles in this episode include famous one on one actions during the Six-Day War. On June 5, 1967, in Operation Focus, the IAF destroyed most of the Egyptian air force while their planes were still on the ground. By the end of the day the IAF had severely crippled the Syrian and Jordanian air forces as well. The Israelis claimed a total of 451 aerial victories against 10 aircraft lost. In the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, the IAF suffered heavy casualties from Soviet anti-aircraft surface-to-air missiles, but managed to regroup and assist IDF ground forces and later bomb targets in Syria and Egypt. One of the first battles in the war's air front was the Ofira Air Battle, involving two Israeli Phantoms versus 28 Egyptian Mig-17s and Mig-21s.

"MiG Alley" is the name given by U.S. Air Force pilots to the northwestern portion of North Korea, where the Yalu River empties into the Yellow Sea. During the Korean War, it was the site of numerous dogfights between U.S. fighter jets and those of the Communist forces, particularly the Soviet Union. The F-86 Sabre and the Soviet-built MiG-15 'Fagot' were the aircraft used throughout most of the conflict, with the area's nickname derived from the latter. Because it was the site of the first large-scale jet-vs.-jet air battles, MiG Alley is considered the birthplace of jet fighter combat.

Technically the speed of sound had probably been broken before that by several Second World War aircraft. Some British and American fighters may have unintentionally exceeded the speed of sound in an evasive dive and there are unconfirmed reports that the German Me 262 jet fighter managed to break the sound barrier. In November 1945, a British jet fighter the Gloster Meteor set a new official world speed record of 606.25 mph. It was two years later before the sound barrier (Mach 1), during level flight, was officially broken by an American aircraft the Bell X-1 flown by test pilot Chuck Yeager who had named the aircraft 'Glamorous Glennis' after his wife. Yeager retired from the Air Force in 1975 as a Brigadier General. The Age of the Super Sonic fighter was born.

Raoul Lufberry, Quentin Roosevelt, son of ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, and Edward Rickenbacker were names that figured extensively in news of the American Air forces during World War I. Lufberry and Roosevelt were killed in action. Rickenbacker, after dozens of hair-raising escapes from death, came through the war without injury and was the American 'Ace of Aces' with 26 confirmed aerial kills. He was awarded the Medal of Honor. The pioneer of American aviators in the war was William Thaw of Yale, who formed the original Lafayette Escadrille, American pilots that flew as volunteers with the French air force prior to the United States entry into the war.
