The Latino Experience is a new PBS documentary series that premiered in August of 2021. The show is a compilation of 13 short films, each of which is directed by a different Latino filmmaker. The series was created in order to highlight the diversity and breadth of Latino experiences in the United States, both historically and in contemporary society.
The series is hosted by Academy Award nominee John Leguizamo, who is himself a well-known Latino actor and advocate for the Latino community in America. Leguizamo's own life and experiences are featured prominently throughout the series, serving as a kind of framing device for the documentary as a whole.
The 13 films that comprise The Latino Experience each touch on different aspects of Latino life and American society more broadly. Some of the films focus on individual stories and experiences, while others look at larger cultural, social, and historical trends.
One such film is titled "Latino Vote: Dispatches from the Battleground." Directed by Bernardo Ruiz, the film looks at the ways in which Latino communities across the country are mobilizing to exercise their political power in the face of entrenched voter suppression efforts. The film features interviews with grassroots activists and political organizers who are working to engage and empower Latino voters, often in the face of significant challenges.
Another film in the series, "El
