Adventurer and YouTuber Eva zu Beck has run ultramarathons before. But running an ultra in Mexico's Copper Canyon with the Rarámuri people tests her mental and physical limits like never before. The Rarámuri are known worldwide for their ability to run extremely long distances without the use of cushioned sneakers or the high-tech supplements that endurance athletes typically rely on. It's a superskill that this community has honed for hundreds of years. Even their name, Rarámuri, means “light-footed” or “those who run well.” After learning how the Rarámuri fuel up for long runs, Eva trains by playing the traditional game of ariwete on the rocky trails along the canyon—all in homemade sandals. Finally, she challenges herself to run 27 miles in the intense heat and treacherous terrain alongside a team of local women.
