Roots is a miniseries that is set in the 18th century and is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Haley. The show tells the story of Kunta Kinte (Malachi Kirby), a young man who is sold into slavery in the United States. The show deals with themes such as identity, family, and race relations.

The show begins with Kunta Kinte's birth in West Africa and shows how his family and community live in peace and harmony until one day, they are attacked by slave traders. Kunta is taken captive and transported to America, where he is put up for sale. He is sold to a plantation owner named John Waller (James Purefoy) and renamed "Toby".

The show then follows Kunta's life on the plantation as he struggles to maintain his identity and culture in a foreign land. He forms a relationship with a fellow slave named Belle (Emayatzy Corinealdi), and together they have a daughter, Kizzy (Anika Noni Rose).

A wedding between two rival families at an isolated estate becomes a lethal trap for everyone in attendance when the location gets sealed-off, and something inside starts taking people.
