Flatliners is a 2017 science fiction horror film directed by Niels Arden Oplev and written by Ben Ripley. It is a remake of the 1990 film of the same name. The movie follows a group of medical students who conduct terrifying experiments on themselves by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, in order to experience what lies beyond death. However, they quickly discover that the line between life and death is much more blurred than they ever could have imagined.
The movie begins with Courtney (Ellen Page), a medical student, conducting an experiment on herself in order to study what happens to the brain when a person dies. She comes up with the idea of temporarily stopping her heart in order to experience "flatlining," during which time her colleagues will monitor her brain activity and revive her after just a few minutes. After some persuasion, her nervous colleagues â Marlo (Nina Dobrev), Jamie (James Norton), Sophia (Kiersey Clemons), and Ray (Diego Luna) â agree to participate in the experiment.
As the experiments progress, each of the students experiences different things when their hearts stop. Some experience peaceful afterlife-like visions, while others are haunted by their deepest fears and guilt. However, the experiments do not come without consequences; each member of the group begins to experience unexplained and terrifying experiences in their everyday lives. The students quickly realize that by tampering with death, they have set off a dangerous chain of events that may have serious repercussions.
The film's science fiction elements are very much at the forefront of the story. The lab scenes where the students stop their hearts and are revived by their colleagues are particularly intense, with flashing lights and beeping heart rate monitors creating a sense of urgency and danger. The movie is unique in the way that it explores the concept of death; it isn't painted as something scary, but rather an experience to be understood.
While the science fiction aspect is certainly intriguing, the film also has a strong horror angle, as the students begin to experience terrifying things as a result of their experimentation. The camera work and music play a part in building suspense and creating a sense of tension, which builds throughout the entire film. The movie also explores themes of guilt, redemption, and the consequences of meddling with both science and death.
The performances from the cast are solid; Ellen Page is particularly good, delivering a nuanced and emotional performance as the leader of the group. She is able to convey the character's intelligence and curiosity while also portraying her anxieties and emotional struggles. Nina Dobrev stands out as the group's resident skeptic, perfectly portraying the character's reluctance to take part in such experimentation.
The movie's visual effects are also praiseworthy, with some particularly striking and unsettling scenes that effectively convey the horrors the students are experiencing. The special effects used to depict the afterlife experiences are particularly noteworthy. The editing, particularly in the early stages of the movie, is also particularly effective, expertly building tension and suspense.
While Flatliners does take some liberties with science and reality, it is a thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking movie. The exploration of life after death, as well as the horror and suspense aspects, make for an intriguing and enjoyable movie. It is both a remake of the original movie and a standalone film in its own right, delving deeper into the science fiction aspects while also keeping the original's horror themes. It's a film that will keep you engaged and guessing until the very end.
