Five Bedrooms is a refreshing and heartwarming Australian comedy-drama series that premiered in 2019. It follows the lives of five unlikely strangers, each at different stages of their lives, who end up buying a house together during a very unusual open house inspection. In this way, they craft the possibility of starting new chapters in their lives and find a sense of belonging that they never knew they needed.
The endearing ensemble cast is lead by renowned Australian actress Kat Stewart, who plays the character of lawyer and single mother, Lizzie. Stephen Peacocke of Home and Away fame plays the role of Ben, a carpenter who is looking for a new meanings in his life. Doris Younane, who's been seen on Wentworth, plays Heather, a successful events coordinator.
The five characters come from very different walks of life, and their individual struggles and ambitions quickly become intertwined as they learn to live together. These struggles include facing the unexpected issues of life such as isolation, love, career setbacks, infertility, and unexpected health scares. But despite their differences, they form a bond over the shared experience of owning a house together - and of course, the occasional arguments.
At the center of the show is a unique premise as homeownership is an important aspect of life, and it can offer a vast array of reactions and emotions. This aspect allows the characters to display raw and authentic performances as they navigate the uncharted territory of co-owning a home with strangers. The show does a great job of mixing humorous and drama-driven moments that are sure to capture your full attention.
There's also a refreshing amount of representation in Five Bedrooms. The diverse cast includes a same-sex couple (played by Roy Joseph and Katie Robertson) and explores topics about life, love, and careers through a uniquely Australian perspective.
Created by Michael Lucas, the writing and dialogue are spot on. The humor in the show is delivered with a sharp wit, but there's plenty of depth to the stories to keep things interesting. The show is set in Melbourne, and the stylish interior d
