Art + Soul was a television series that premiered on ABC on Sunday, August 15, 2010. The show was hosted by Rachel Griffiths, and its focus is on the contemporary art scene in Australia. The program took viewers on a journey through different galleries, exhibitions, and artistic events in the country. It explored the diverse range of mediums used by Australian artists, while also delving into their backgrounds and sources of inspiration.

During each episode, Griffiths visited various artists in their studios, and discussed their artworks and creative processes. She interviewed painters, sculptors, photographers, and performers, giving viewers an insight into their personal stories and motivations.

The series aimed to showcase the unique and distinct work that Australian artists produce, whilst celebrating the country's rich cultural heritage. It also explored the challenges that artists and curators face in getting their work seen and appreciated by the wider public.

Art + Soul must be commended for its visually stunning cinematography, which was a blend of modernity and classic filmmaking techniques. The show's producers made the effort to capture not only the artists but also the locations and landscapes in which they worked. The cameras managed to capture the raw, yet stunning beauty of Australia, as well as the contrasting urban surroundings of the cities, that in turn shaped the artworks of the artists.

One of the strengths of the show was its ability to appeal to a wide audience. Art + Soul was not directed solely at art aficionados, but also at those who are interested in knowing more about mindset behind creative art. It allowed its audience to appreciate art for what it is and, more importantly, what it represents. It explored the importance and relevance of contemporary art in Australian culture, and how it reflects and contributes to the country's heritage.

Art + Soul was 12 episodes long, with each episode running for around 50 minutes. Each installment focused on a single theme, which was carefully curated in order to bring together artists with similar messages, styles, or mediums. The series covered topics such as indigenous art, public art, street art, photography, and experimental art.

The show was universally praised for its ability to bring lesser-known artists to the forefront. Not only did it provide exposure to established artists in the field, but it equally showcased up-and-coming creatives, exhibiting the depth and breadth of the contemporary Australian art scene. It gave many emerging artists a platform to showcase their work nationally and, at times, internationally.

In addition to the featured artists, the show also gave viewers an insight into the curators who had curated the exhibitions. They not only shared their thoughts on the pieces but also gave detailed accounts of the processes behind creating an art show. This feature provided a behind-the-scenes look into the art world, highlighting the roles that galleries and curators play in promoting and showcasing contemporary art.

Overall, Art + Soul was an outstanding documentary series that successfully captured the essence of contemporary art in Australia. It was informative, insightful, and entertaining, and it left its audience with a newfound appreciation for the creative genius that exists in the country. The show successfully managed to show that art is not just an indulgence for the elite, but is a form of expression that is accessible to all, and that it remains evergreen, despite its temporal and financial cost.

Christian Thompson's own body is the basis of his eclectic art, however he feels the pull of his Queensland homeland strongly. The human form also dominates the work of Nicole Foreshew, who infuses her work with elements of the land - bark, ochre and leaves.

Daniel Boyd paints Captain Cook as pirate, not explorer, and his large dot paintings ask big questions about past actions of the church. Yolngu man Wanyubi Marika's art proudly tells ancient stories of law and land. The past is embedded in the light installations of Jonathan Jones, proclaiming that Australia's rich Aboriginal past can't be extinguished, even within a metropolis as dominant as Sydney.
