Part of Adolf Hitler's obsession in World War II was bringing the Soviet Union to its knees. Despite signing a treaty with the Soviets just prior to invading Poland in 1939, Hitler decided to open up a second front in the war when he marched his forces into the Soviet Union. Against the advice of his generals, Hitler decided that the main goal of the campaign against the Soviets should be the capture of Stalingrad. It was the city that was named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Hitler considered it to be a significant location. After many months and many lives, Hitler would be faced with a decision that would alter the course of the war forever.
