Filmed in Russia, the United States, Japan, China, Italy, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden, Wings Over the World pulls together a series of mammoth proportions. Containing much previously unseen footage from around the world, each hour long documentary tells the story of 20th century flight as seen through the eyes of those who were boys at the time of the Wright brothers memorable first flight - boys who grew into the men who built world aviation. As a young boy, Roy Chadwick watches with keen interest the work of Alliot Verden Roe as he developed the famous World War I Avro 500. Many successful aircraft followed, machines that helped explorers and other pioneers like Bert Hinkler on his epic flight to Australia. Chadwick's career is highlighted with the development of the Avro Lancaster, so vital to the survival of Great Britain in World War II and the Shackleton, the last piston engine aircraft to serve with the British RAF. Today the Avro company is all but lost in the huge conglomerate that has become British Aerospace, but Chadwick's legacy lives on in some of the finest military and civil aircraft.
