Filmed in Russia, the United States, Japan, China, Italy, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden, Wings Over the World pulls together a series of mammoth proportions. Containing much previously unseen footage from around the world, each hour long documentary tells the story of 20th century flight as seen through the eyes of those who were boys at the time of the Wright brothers memorable first flight - boys who grew into the men who built world aviation. At the turn of the century two young boys dreamed of becoming great aviators. Claude Dornier began designing revolutionary new airships with Count Zeppelin and - even during the ban on aircraft construction that followed Germany's World War I defeat - he continued aircraft development illegally at home and abroad. Messerschmidt's career flourished as he built the most sophisticated fighter planes of World War II. Their stories provide an exciting view from the other side of the war - tales of deceit and slave labor. Yet from the ashes of World War II, both rose to become the mainstay of European aviation. Later absorbed into the huge conglomerate Airbus Industry, their organizations offer the only real competition to the U.S. dominated aircraft market.
