In 1990, after a long hard fought battle between Native American rights activists and the scientific community, the Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act was passed allowing Native American tribes to reclaim the bones and artifacts of their ancestors that were placed in museums and laboratories throughout the country. It seemed the fight was over until just recently when the bones of a 9,000 year old skeleton were discovered on the banks of the Columbia River outside Kennwick, Washington. Now the heated debate has once again come to a head between the Indian tribes of the area and mainstream archeologists.
