Erik van der Poel and his great love Truike Heemskerk grew up in the typically Dutch village of Oud Ade. They were two of the 193 Dutch passengers who died in the disaster on 17 July 2014. The terrible news hit the village like a bomb and the sorrow was overwhelming. For no fewer than six weeks flags flew at half-mast at many houses in Oud Ade.
