Too Much Sleep is a 1997 independent film that tells the story of a young security guard named Jack Ballo, played by Marc Palmieri, who has grown tired of his mundane night job in a Long Island housing complex. Jack's life is a repetitive routine of little significance, until he is shaken out of his apathy by a new development in the complex when a mystery man is found dead in his van outside. Jack accidentally becomes the lead detective in the case and as he sets out to investigate the murder, he discovers secrets about the community that he never imagined existed.

Jack's investigation leads him through a bizarre labyrinth of odd characters, including several dim-witted criminals, who operate out of the same housing complex. Jack soon finds himself entangled in a dangerous web of deceit and corruption that has taken root in the heart of this seemingly quiet community. What was supposed to be a simple investigation soon turns into a personal mission to save his own skin, as Jack struggles to figure out who killed the mystery man and why.

As Jack becomes more and more involved in his investigation, he finds himself unraveling the complex web of relationships and events that led to the crime. Along the way, he meets a cast of peculiar characters, including his wise-cracking partner Carlo, played by Pasquale Gaeta, as well as a seductive woman named Ruby, played by Nicol Zanzarella, who may be connected to the murder in more ways than one.

Too Much Sleep is a film that subverts the traditional detective story, unfolding more like a surreal daydream than a straightforward mystery. The narrative is quirky and offbeat, with a subtle dark humor that runs throughout. Rather than being a traditional whodunit, Too Much Sleep is more an exploration of character and situation, as Jack's world is turned upside down by the events he finds himself caught up in.

As Jack delves deeper into his investigation, he is forced to take on responsibilities he never expected to face, and finds himself challenged in ways he never thought possible. With a vivid cast of characters and a unique visual style, Too Much Sleep is a captivating and memorable independent film that offers a fresh and imaginative take on the detective genre. While it may be a bit slow-paced at times, the film's quirks, characters, and humor ultimately make the journey well worth the investment of time.

Overall, Too Much Sleep is a film that explores the darker side of human nature while maintaining a distinctively quirky perspective. It's a film that is imbued with a sense of warmth and humanity, even as it reveals the worst in its characters. Anyone looking for a fresh take on the film noir genre will find plenty to enjoy in this film, which is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Even though it's a lesser-known film, Too Much Sleep is a hidden gem in the world of independent cinema that is well worth seeking out.

Too Much Sleep is a 2015 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 21 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 67.
