Nagata (Yamazaki) is the writer/director of a theatre troupe called Oroka that he founded with a high school friend. The troupe's avant-garde productions are unpopular and the members have now all but left due to disagreements. One day, Nagata meets Saki (Matsuoka), a fashion school student who had come to Tokyo to become an actress. He notices that they are wearing matching sneakers and asks her out for coffee, something completely out of character for him. They gradually fall in love, and he moves in with her. Saki sees Nagata's creative talent and indulges him, telling him that her apartment is "the safest place." She supports him in many ways including helping him make props, and she becomes a source of comfort that he had never felt before. Nagata believes that the only way he can make Saki happy is to succeed as a playwright.
