After Walter Bernsdorf kills his wife for having an affair, lawyer Paul Held agrees to represent him. Paul suggests using temporary insanity as a defense and sees that it could be successful. He also notices Paul's wife's behaviors in his own wife, Maria, and soon realizes that if Walter's defense could work once, it might work a second time.
