The Call of the Wild is a 2020 adventure film based on the novel of the same name by Jack London. Directed by Chris Sanders, the film follows a domesticated dog named Buck who is taken from his comfortable life in California and sold into the Alaskan wilderness to be a sled dog during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. The movie opens with Buck, a large St. Bernard/Scotch Collie mix, living a happy life as the pet of a wealthy family in Santa Clara, California. However, things soon take a turn for the worse when Buck is stolen and sold by a deceitful gardener to be trained as a sled dog in the harsh terrain of Alaska.
In Alaska, Buck is purchased by Perrault (Omar Sy), a mail carrier who is swept up in the Gold Rush and needs Buck to help deliver mail. With the help of his assistant, Françoise (Cara Gee), Perrault begins to train Buck to pull sleds, teaching him the harsh realities of life in the wild.
Throughout the film, Buck has many adventures, including being attacked by a vicious dog on his team and roaming the wilderness on his own before ultimately finding a new human companion in John Thornton (Harrison Ford). John is a grieving loner who was once a gold prospector but now spends his days drinking and mourning the loss of his son.
Together, John and Buck form a bond that is tested when John discovers a hidden gold deposit and becomes obsessed with finding it. Meanwhile, Buck must navigate the wild Alaskan landscape and protect his human friends from dangerous wolves.
While the film features an all-star cast, including Karen Gillan and Dan Stevens, the real star of the show is Buck, portrayed through CGI animation. The animators did an excellent job of bringing Buck to life, capturing his expressions, body language, and movements in a way that makes him feel like a genuine animal rather than an animated character.
The Call of the Wild is a heartwarming tale about the power of friendship between humans and animals and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. While it is a family-friendly film, it does have several intense scenes that may be too much for young children.
Overall, The Call of the Wild is an excellent adaptation of a classic novel that will leave audiences feeling moved and inspired. The stunning Alaskan scenery, combined with the superb acting and animation, creates an immersive experience that will transport viewers to a different time and place. Whether you are a fan of the original book or simply looking for a heartwarming adventure movie, The Call of the Wild is a must-see.
