This picture is set in 1940, in the time following the Spanish Civil War. Elena is a seemingly normal mother who has only a few routines in her day, drop off her children at school and care for them when they come home. However, the family harbors a secret that the outside world has no inkling of. Ricardo, who is Elena's husband and a Republican soldier, is hiding in the home and has not left for fear that he would be captured and killed. Salvador is a teacher to Elena's son, and is still suffering from extreme PTSD from the war.
