Fleeing legal troubles in New York, genial con man Sylvanus Hurley (Robert Cummings) has sought refuge in 1890's Florida. Teaming up with Adie Titus (Terry Moore), a flirtatious young runaway, Hurley sets out to walk from Palm Beach to Miami, following in the footsteps of mailman Steven Pierton (Jerome Courtland) as he makes his rounds. When a gang of beachcombing outlaws attacks the trio, it's Pierton who helps beat them back. With both men attracted to Adie, Hurley dreams up a land speculation scheme to fleece Miami's settlers of their life savings. But once he sees the folly of his ways, the reformed con man teams with the barefoot mailman to protect Adie and the locals as the outlaws lay siege to the town.
