From the title alone, you may think that Teenage Slumber Party Nightmare is an over-the-top, cheesy horror movie. However, this 2014 indie flick is a surprisingly well-made and intense thriller that manages to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The movie follows a group of high school girls who decide to have a sleepover at one of their houses while her parents are out of town. However, things quickly take a dark turn when they start receiving disturbing phone calls and realize that someone is watching them from outside.
The first thing that stands out about this movie is its cast. Despite being relatively unknown actresses at the time, Kaitlyn Yurkiw, Lauren Richardson, and Hillary Kaplan deliver strong performances that make you care about their characters and root for them to survive the ordeal. Yurkiw, in particular, plays the lead role of Rachel with a convincing mix of vulnerability and strength, and her chemistry with the other girls is palpable.
Another aspect of Teenage Slumber Party Nightmare that sets it apart from other low-budget horror movies is its direction and cinematography. Director David DeCoteau (who has a long history of making B-movies) knows how to create tension and suspense with limited resources, and he makes clever use of lighting and camera angles to keep you guessing about who the killer is.
