Sweetheart is a horror thriller movie that was released in 2019. Directed by J.D. Dillard, the movie stars Kiersey Clemons as a young woman named Jenn, who is stranded on a remote island after a boating accident. Along with Jenn, the movie also stars Emory Cohen as Lucas, Hanna Mangan Lawrence as Mia, and Andrew Crawford as Brad. The movie begins with Jenn waking up on a deserted beach, with no recollection of how she got there. After some initial exploration, she discovers that she is not alone on the island - there are strange creatures lurking in the woods, and they seem to be coming closer and closer to where she is staying. With no way to communicate with the outside world and limited resources to survive on, Jenn must find a way to fend off the creatures and make it off the island alive.
One of the most interesting aspects of Sweetheart is the character development of Jenn. As the movie progresses, we learn more about her past and her personality, and it becomes clear that she is a very capable and resourceful individual. Her survival instincts kick in quickly, and it's clear that she is determined to make it out of this situation alive. At the same time, we also get to see some vulnerability in her character, as she grapples with feelings of loneliness and fear. Clemons delivers an excellent performance in this role, and it's easy to empathize with her character and root for her survival.
Another notable aspect of Sweetheart is the creature design. These creatures are creepy and unsettling, with long, spindly limbs and glowing eyes. They move quickly and silently, making them even more difficult to track and evade. There are also some interesting hints dropped throughout the movie about where these creatures might have come from, and what their motivations might be. Without giving too much away, let's just say that the answers are not entirely straightforward.
In terms of pacing, Sweetheart does an excellent job of ramping up the tension and suspense. The first half of the movie is fairly slow-paced, with lots of shots of Jenn exploring the island and trying to figure out what's going on. However, once the creatures start to make their presence known, things really start to pick up. There are some truly terrifying moments, including some jump scares that are sure to get your heart racing. At the same time, the movie also knows when to dial back the horror and let the audience catch its breath. There are several scenes of Jenn trying to survive and take care of herself that are surprisingly poignant and emotional.
Overall, Sweetheart is a tense and atmospheric horror movie that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. It's anchored by a strong performance from Kiersey Clemons, who makes Jenn a compelling and relatable protagonist. The creature design is also top-notch, and there are plenty of moments that will have you jumping out of your seat. At the same time, the movie also has a lot of heart, and it's clear that the filmmakers were invested in creating a character-driven horror story. If you're a fan of survival horror or just looking for something a little bit different, then Sweetheart is definitely worth checking out.
