During a violent storm in the Victorian Highlands, a secluded homestead is rocked by ferocious weather, disturbing a writer mother, Elyne Mitchell and her young daughter, Indi. To soothe her scared daughter, Elyne begins telling her a magical tale about a great silver brumby named Thowra and how this mighty beast was born into the treacherous highlands near their home. The next morning, and over the coming days, Elyne continues her story, detailing the life of this majestic creature as he fights capture by an obsessive mountain man and struggles to fulfill his destiny as king of all the mountain brumbies.
