She Demons is a 1958 classic science fiction/horror movie directed by Richard E. Cunha. The story starts with three people - Fred (Tod Griffin), the pilot, Les (Victor Sen Yung), the co-pilot, and Jerrie (Irish McCalla), the passenger, flying to an unknown island to search for a treasure. Things take a dark turn when their plane crashes on the island, and they find themselves stranded with no hope for rescue.
As they explore the island, they come across a mansion that seems deserted. Upon closer inspection, they discover a laboratory in the basement, where they meet Dr. Murdock (Rudolph Anders), who appears to be working on some kind of experiment. They soon find out that Dr. Murdock has been experimenting with a serum that can turn animals into half-human beings - She Demons.
The movie takes a creepy turn when Dr. Murdock injects a woman (Gene Roth) with the serum, turning her into the first She Demon. The She Demon then kills Dr. Murdock and starts hunting down Fred, Les, and Jerrie. The trio manages to escape from the mansion and seeks refuge in a cave, where they find a group of stranded mercenaries.
The mercenaries, led by a tough guy named Taro (John Ashley), had come to the island to look for another missing explorer. Together, they hatch a plan to escape the island while fighting against the She Demons who are hunting them down. The group soon discovers that the She Demons are attracted to Dr. Murdock's whistle and use it to lure the creatures away from them.
The movie culminates in a thrilling climax as the group fights to stay alive while escaping the island. The She Demons prove to be a formidable foe, and the group must fight against them using whatever resources they can find on the island.
She Demons is a classic science fiction movie that has a high camp value. The movie's low budget is apparent in the primitive special effects and makeup, but the suspenseful storyline and the dramatic performances make up for the movie's shortcomings.
One of the highlights of the movie is the performance by John Ashley, who plays the role of Taro, the tough mercenary leader. Ashley's charisma and intensity bring a gritty realism to the otherwise fantastical storyline, making the character of Taro a standout among the other characters.
The movie's other standout performance is by Irish McCalla, who plays Jerrie. McCalla's portrayal of the gutsy female lead is refreshing, as she takes an active role in the group's survival rather than being a damsel in distress.
On the downside, the movie's pacing is inconsistent, with long stretches of the film that seem to drag on, making the viewer lose interest in the story.
