Self/less is a science fiction and thriller movie directed by Tarsem Singh, released on July 10, 2015. The movie features a wealthy and terminally ill businessman named Damian Hale (played by Ben Kingsley), who approaches a mysterious organization called Phoenix Biogenic in order to save his life. The company promises to transfer his consciousness to a younger and healthy body, giving him a chance to experience youth and vitality once again. Damian agrees, and after his consciousness is successfully transferred to the new body (played by Ryan Reynolds), he begins a new life under the identity of Edward Kingley, a fictional character created for the purpose of maintaining his new persona.
Initially, Edward enjoys his new body and lifestyle, but he soon starts experiencing strange visions and flashbacks that don't belong to him. As he delves deeper into his past, he discovers that his new body was not grown in a laboratory but rather taken from an unwilling, living donor. He realizes that he is not who he thought he was and that his new body is, in fact, the product of a process that involves kidnapping, murder and brainwashing, and that he is only one of Phoenix Biogenic's many unwilling clients.
With the help of a nurse named Madeline, who took care of Damian before his transfer, and his own memories, Edward begins a journey to uncover the truth about his new life and the organization that facilitated it. However, he quickly realizes that it is not easy to betray a powerful and influential corporation that has the power to control life and death.
The movie tells a story of a man's quest for redemption, while at the same time exploring themes of identity, mortality, and the ethics of life extension. It also raises intriguing questions about what makes us who we are, and whether a consciousness can truly be transferred from one body to another.
Ryan Reynolds delivers an excellent performance as Edward/Damian, portraying the character's confusion, anger and determination with skill and depth. Ben Kingsley is equally impressive as Damian, bringing an even greater emotional depth to the character of a man who is facing his mortality.
The plot moves at a brisk pace, with plenty of action, suspense and plot twists to keep the audience engaged. The cinematography is stunning, with eye-catching images of New Orleans, where much of the movie takes place. The movie's soundtrack is also noteworthy, with a mix of haunting and ethereal melodies that add to the movie's eerie and mysterious atmosphere.
The movie's villain, Albright (played by Matthew Goode), is also worth mentioning. His calm demeanor and chilling efficiency make him a memorable and menacing antagonist.
Overall, Self/less is a thought-provoking and thrilling movie that features excellent performances, a captivating plot, and stunning visuals. While the movie may not be perfect in every way, it is certainly worth watching for its exploration of identity, mortality and the pursuit of eternal youth.
Selfless is a 2021 documentary with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes.
