Hastily painted mysterious symbols are appearing on the doors of apartment buildings all over Paris. The rumor of a plague epidemic is spreading through the capital like wildfire. The first body bearing all the symptoms of the terrible scourge is soon discovered. Commissaire Adamsberg, an unusual, intuitive policeman, is put in charge of the investigation.
