Scratch is a 2015 drama that follows the life of a young woman named Taylor, played by Julie Romaniuk, who returns home to her small town after being away for several years. Taylor is an aspiring DJ and producer who is trying to make her way in the music industry. She is met with various challenges, including dealing with the loss of her mother, reconnecting with her estranged father, and facing sexism and discrimination in a male-dominated industry.
The movie begins with Taylor traveling back to her hometown in Canada in hopes of reconnecting with her father, who she has not seen in many years. She finds that her father, played by Craig Cyr, is not in the best of health and is struggling to keep up with his job as a mechanic. Taylor offers to help out at the garage, but her heart is set on pursuing her passion for music.
Despite her father's wishes for her to stay in town and help with the family business, Taylor joins forces with a local DJ named Vaughn, played by Romaine Waite, and together they begin to create music and perform at various clubs around the city. The pair quickly become successful but face challenges as they encounter sexism and discrimination in the industry.
The movie explores themes of family, grief, friendship, and the struggle of following one's dreams. Throughout the film, Taylor battles with the guilt of leaving her father behind to pursue her passion, but ultimately finds a balance between chasing her dreams and being there for her family.
The performances in Scratch are excellent, with Romaniuk delivering a compelling portrayal of a young woman trying to make a name for herself in an industry that is not always welcoming to women. Her chemistry with Waite is also noteworthy, and the two actors have great on-screen chemistry that adds to the authenticity of their characters' relationship.
The movie's soundtrack features original music from the popular Canadian DJ Scratch Bastid, who worked on the film as a music consultant. His contributions to the movie's soundtrack add an extra layer of authenticity to the story and make for a compelling and engaging viewing experience.
Overall, Scratch is an inspiring and heartfelt movie that explores the challenges faced by young women in the music industry. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the story is a testament to the determination and resilience required to pursue one's dreams. The film's excellent performances and authentic soundtrack make for an entertaining and thought-provoking viewing experience that is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages.
