Rock N' Rule is a 1983 animated musical science-fiction fantasy movie directed by Clive A. Smith, and featuring songs by several rock musicians. The movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a race of humanoid rats, called "rat people", have taken over, and it follows a band of humans who try to reclaim their society. The movie opens with a prologue that explains how the world has been taken over by the rat people, who have built a society based on technology and science. However, their leader, Mok Swagger, has become obsessed with an ancient prophecy that says that music can be used to unleash a demon from another dimension. Mok believes that he can use music to open a portal to the other dimension and control the demon, which will give him ultimate power.
The story then shifts to the band, consisting of a trio of musicians: Angel, Omar, and Dizzy. They live in a rundown apartment building in a city that has been mostly abandoned, and they dream of making it big in the music industry. Angel is the lead singer and guitarist, Omar plays the bass guitar, and Dizzy is the drummer, as well as the comic relief.
One day, Mok hears Angel's music on the radio and invites her, along with her band, to his palace to perform at a concert. Mok's true intentions are revealed when he drugs Angel and reveals his plan to use her as the key to opening the portal to the other dimension. Mok has a machine that can scan a person's brainwaves and use them to create a perfect musical performance. He plans to use Angel's brainwaves to create the perfect song that will open the portal.
The rest of the movie follows the band as they try to rescue Angel from Mok's grasp and prevent him from unleashing the demon. They are aided by a mutant named Zip, who has a personal vendetta against Mok and knows how to navigate the underground tunnels that lead to the palace.
The movie blends elements of rock music, science-fiction, and fantasy to create a unique and memorable world. The animation style is reminiscent of 1980s cartoons, with exaggerated character designs and bright colors. The music is a highlight of the movie, with songs by Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed, among others. The songs are woven into the plot seamlessly, and help to create a strong atmosphere and sense of world-building.
The characters are all well-developed and relatable, with each member of the band having their own distinct personality and motivations. Angel is a strong-willed and determined character, while Omar is more reserved and analytical. Dizzy is the comic relief, but is still shown to be a valuable member of the team. Mok is a compelling villain, with his obsession with the prophecy driving him to extreme measures.
One of the themes of the movie is the power of music, and how it can be used for both good and evil. Mok believes that music is a tool to control others and gain power, while the band sees music as a way to express themselves and connect with others. This theme is explored through the various musical performances in the movie, as well as the climactic showdown between the band and Mok.
Overall, Rock N' Rule is an underrated gem of 1980s animation. It combines music, science-fiction, and fantasy into a unique and entertaining package, with memorable characters and strong themes. If you're a fan of 1980s animation, rock music, or just looking for something different, this is definitely worth checking out.
