Ready or Not is a 2019 horror-comedy film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and stars Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, and Andie MacDowell. The movie follows the story of a young bride named Grace (Weaving) who marries into a wealthy and eccentric family, but soon discovers that her new in-laws have a twisted tradition that requires the new bride to play a deadly game of hide-and-seek on her wedding night.
The film begins with Grace, a former foster child, marrying into the Le Domas gaming dynasty, a wealthy family that made its fortune on board games and other forms of entertainment. Grace's husband, Alex Le Domas (Mark O'Brien), warns her about the family's strange traditions, but she dismisses them as harmless eccentricities. However, after the wedding ceremony, the Le Domas family gathers for a game of hide-and-seek, which Grace soon realizes is no ordinary game.
The family explains to Grace that the game is a centuries-old tradition, in which the new bride must hide while the other family members hunt her down with antique weapons. If the bride is caught before dawn, she will be sacrificed to Satan in a blood ritual that is believed to keep the family wealthy and successful. Grace initially thinks the family is joking, but when she sees the determination in their eyes, she realizes that they are deadly serious.
As the night wears on, Grace discovers that she is not alone in her plight. Alex's brother, Daniel (Adam Brody), sympathizes with her and offers to help her escape, while Alex's mother, Becky (Andie MacDowell), struggles with her own doubts about the family's traditions. Meanwhile, the rest of the family becomes increasingly unhinged as they hunt for Grace, using increasingly brutal and sadistic methods to try and capture her.
The film is an effective blend of horror and comedy, with plenty of tense moments and dark humor to keep the audience engaged. The cast is excellent, particularly Samara Weaving as Grace, who manages to convey both vulnerability and strength in the face of danger. Adam Brody is also a standout as Daniel, the conflicted brother who has doubts about his family's traditions but is powerless to stop them.
Overall, Ready or Not is a fun and entertaining horror-comedy that will appeal to fans of the genre. While it doesn't break any new ground in terms of plot or themes, it is well-executed and has plenty of memorable moments that will stick with viewers long after the credits roll.
