Radha and Devika in lead roles. The movie is based on the novel 'Vekkai' by Sa. Kandhasamy. The movie revolves around two friends, Ramu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Babu(Gemini Ganesan). Ramu works as a writer and Babu is a lawyer. Both are leading a happy life with their respective families. One day, the two friends meet for lunch, where Babu talks about a case that he is going to take up. The case is about Shankar (M. R. Radha), an innocent villager who is falsely accused of robbery and given the death penalty. The villagers believe that he has stolen the temple jewelry and are outraged. He maintains his innocence, but no one believes him. Babu takes up the case pro bono to prove Shankar's innocence.
As Babu proceeds with the case, he realizes that there are powerful people behind the false charges against Shankar. He also discovers that the real thief is someone else. Meanwhile, Ramu goes to the village to investigate and learns about Shankar. Ramu, who is also a poet, feels empathetic towards Shankar's condition and writes a poem about him which gains popularity among the people.
The rest of the movie portrays how Babu fights for Shankar's justice and how Ramu's poem spreads awareness among the villagers. The plot also highlights the strong bond of friendship between the two lead actors.
Sivaji Ganesan's portrayal of Ramu is excellent in the movie, he is seen as compassionate and poetic. Whereas Gemini Ganesan's performance as Babu is portrayed as a brave and intelligent lawyer. Savitri, who plays Ramu's wife, supports him throughout the film. M.R. Radha as Shankar has also done a remarkable job in the movie, convincingly portraying the agony of a man falsely accused of a crime.
The film was noted for its strong themes of social justice and friendship. It also had a melodious soundtrack composed by the iconic duo Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, with lyrics by Kannadasan. The movie's most memorable song is "Ulagam Piranthathu Enakkaga," sung by T. M. Soundararajan, and written by Kannadasan.
