One Day in April is a documentary film that showcases the emotional and physical challenges that the members of the University of Michigan's men's cycling team face in their quest to win the annual National Collegiate Cycling Association championship. The movie is set in the year 2014, and the story revolves around the grueling race day in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the Wolverines compete against 36 other teams from across the country. The film primarily follows four key team members - Jake, Kevin, Avery, and Matt - as they prepare for and participate in the race.

Throughout the film, viewers gain insight into the rigorous training that the cyclists undergo in order to prepare for the championship. We see them pushing themselves to the limit, tirelessly training on steep hills and mountainous terrain. We also see the camaraderie and dedication that these athletes have towards each other as they work to achieve their common goal.

Director and executive producer, Spike Jonze, does an excellent job of capturing the intensity of this rarely seen sport. The film is adept at weaving together intense cycling action with personal insights of the athletes we follow. One moment we see Jake pushing through his final grueling training sessions before the race. The next, we see Kevin and the rest of the team discussing their expectations for the upcoming race, and what it will take to achieve their goal of winning the championship.

One of the standout aspects of the movie is the way it weaves in the backstories of each of the athletes. For example, viewers learn about Jake's difficulty balancing his personal life with his passion for cycling. We also see Kevin's struggles in coming back from a previous injury and the team's efforts to keep his spirits high, ultimately resulting in him becoming one of the team's top performers.

Despite the physical and mental challenges these athletes face, Jonze balances the film with small moments of joy that make the athletes, and by extension, the audience, feel human. These grace notes include Matt's almost mystical love of wildlife and nature, and Avery recalling the time when he first got on a bike with the encouragement of his mom.

Without giving too much away, the climax of the movie centers around the Wolverines' performance in the championship race, with the filmmakers doing an excellent job of capturing the nail-biting intensity of the competition.

Overall, One Day in April is a thrilling and emotional journey that provides a glimpse into the world of college cycling and the intense dedication and passion of these athletes. Jonze's film manages to take a sport that most viewers may have never given much thought to, and through sharing the personal stories of the actors involved, infuses it with a deep emotional connection that is both inspiring and deeply resonant. For sports enthusiasts, as well as audiences looking for a moving documentary that will leave them inspired, One Day in April is a must-watch.
