O Pagador de Promessas is an award-winning Brazilian drama movie about a man whose best friend is a donkey. After his donkey falls gravely ill, the man promises a spirit that he will donate his land to the impoverished if his donkey recovers, and make a pilgrimage to Salvador with a cross upon his back. However, once in Salvador, the man finds his promise rejected by the church for having been made to a spirit, and thrust into the middle of the political and religious machinations ongoing in the city.
