My Husband from is a romantic comedy that follows Mary (Mary Lazarus), a 30-something year old woman living in New York City who feels like she's ready to settle down and get married. However, she hasn't had much luck with relationships lately. Her best friend convinces her to try a new dating app called Soulmate Finder that uses complex algorithms to find your perfect match. The creators of the app claim it has a 99% success rate for finding people's soulmates.
Skeptical but willing to give it a shot, Mary fills out the lengthy questionnaire and sets up her dating profile. She's matched with Mark (Mofe Duncan), a handsome 35-year old businessman who recently moved to the city from London. Mark also agreed to try Soulmate Finder at the urging of his friends, hoping this might finally be the way to meet the woman he's meant to spend his life with.
Mary and Mark are quick to hit it off when they meet for their first date at a cozy Italian restaurant. The conversation flows easily and they have a lot in common, from their taste in music to their close relationships with their families. This immediately feels different than any other first date they've been on. Could it be that the app actually worked and they've met their perfect match?
As their relationship progresses, however, cracks begin to form. Mark invites Mary to weekend-long work events and expects her to schmooze with his bosses and colleagues. Mary had imagined a life of adventure with her husband, not boring corporate gatherings. Meanwhile, Mark thinks Mary is too impulsive and irresponsible when she quits her long-time office job to start her own baking business out of their apartment.
They clash over their priorities and visions for the future. Mark wants to start planning to have kids soon, but Mary isn't sure she's ready for that. Egged on by their friends, who question whether the app really does know best, Mary and Mark start to wonder if they truly are meant to be after all.
The turning point comes on the weekend of their one-year anniversary. Mark plans an extravagant getaway to an island resort as a surprise for Mary. She's always wanted to visit a tropical paradise, so he thought it would be the ultimate romantic gift. When he tells Mary the news, instead of being excited she bursts into tears. She admits she doesn't like over-the-top gestures and would have preferred a quiet weekend at home.
They realize they still barely know each other, despite what the Soulmate Finder claimed about their compatibility. Mary and Mark have an honest heart-to-heart conversation and acknowledge they need to put in the work to truly understand each other if they want this relationship to last. They commit to communicating better, making compromises, and nurturing their romance.
By the end of the film, Mary and Mark have strengthened their bond. They know that just because an app said they were perfect on paper, it will still take real effort to build a life together. The matching algorithms couldn't account for all the surprises and challenges that come with any marriage. My Husband from is as much a story about modern dating as it is a reminder that technology cannot replace genuine human connection.
My Husband is a 2020 drama with a runtime of 47 hours.
