Lou Rawls, who died in 2006, was a leading figure in popular music for over fifty years, as well as being one of its most respected and versatile. Rawls' early roots were in gospel, as was the case with many of the great soul voices of his generation. Following spells with two of Chicago's finest gospel groups, The Highway Q.C.'s and The Pilgrim Travelers, his move into secular music - as he branched out into the fields of jazz, R&B, soul and even easy-listening - proved highly successful.
