How To Marry a Millionaire Part 1 is a classic romantic comedy released in 1953. The film is directed by Jean Negulesco and stars Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall as lead actresses. The movie follows the story of three women who are looking for wealthy men to marry, so they can escape their financial struggles. The film begins with a shot of a luxurious mansion where the three protagonists, Schatze Page (Lauren Bacall), Loco Dempsey (Betty Grable), and Pola Debevoise (Marilyn Monroe), reside. They are all struggling financially and are renting the mansion for $750 per month. Schatze, a resourceful and determined woman, comes up with a plan to find rich husbands for her and her two friends. She convinces the other two to attend a party she has arranged, where they will have the opportunity to meet eligible bachelors.
At the party, the three women attract the attention of several wealthy men, including J.D. Hanley (William Powell), a wealthy oil tycoon who Schatze is particularly interested in. However, the women are initially discouraged when they learn that the male guests at the party are mostly already married. Nevertheless, they continue their search for eligible bachelors.
Schatze convinces the group to fly to Maine, where they believe they will find rich men who own hunting lodges. While there, Pola meets a wealthy man named Freddie Denmark (David Wayne) who she believes is rich enough to meet her standards. However, he is a forest ranger and not as wealthy as Pola first thought. Loco, meanwhile, meets a man named Eben (Rory Calhoun) who she believes is rich due to his ownership of a fur coat. However, it turns out he is a gas station attendant and the fur coat is a fake.
Back in New York City, Schatze meets with J.D. Hanley, who offers to invest in her Texas oil wells in exchange for a marriage proposal. Schatze agrees to the proposal, despite being in love with Tom Brookman (Cameron Mitchell), a man she met earlier in the film.
The film ends with Schatze and J.D. Hanley's engagement party, where Tom Brookman makes a dramatic appearance and confesses his love for Schatze. Schatze realizes that she is in love with Tom and breaks off her engagement with J.D. Hanley. The film concludes with the three women deciding to continue their search for love on their own terms, rather than relying solely on a man's wealth.
In summary, How To Marry a Millionaire Part 1 is a classic romantic comedy that explores themes of love, wealth, and independence. The three female protagonists are determined to find rich husbands but ultimately realize that love and happiness cannot be bought. The film is entertaining and humorous, showcasing the talents of its lead actresses, particularly Marilyn Monroe in one of her most iconic roles.
