This French historical documentary film was released in 1988. It is divided into four chapters, with each chapter having two parts, for a total of eight sections for the entire film. The first part of chapter one was released in 1988 and the second part in 1989. Chapter two was released in 1997 and chapters three and four were released in 1998. The film aims to show the history of cinema through the ages by showing quotations from films. The quotes from the movies are sometimes in visual form where actors say them, and are at times just written on screen. Running at over four hours long, the film quotes hundreds of movies from the well known to the obscure in an attempt to show how film has evolved over the years.
