Hock Lee Poh is an inveterate gambler who often is down on his luck because he insists that if he continues to gamble, the scales will eventually tip in his favor. He has two daughter. The eldest is very much like him and squanders all of her money on ill-advised pursuits. Meanwhile, the younger daughter is illegitimate and less respected, but she has much better financial sense. She's responsible, and because of this, she often finds herself bailing out her irresponsible sister and father. Still, she has a bright outlook on life, and whatever troubles come, she smiles through them.
