British prisoner of war Hannibal Brooks spends his time in the Second World war caring for Lucy the elephant at Munich Zoo, a bombing raid damages the zoo and Hannibal is sent with a group of German soldiers to transport Lucy to the Austrian city of Innsbruck. After being refused access to the train, Hannibal is forced to walk with Lucy and his unhappy guards. An escaped American soldier assists the group as they realize they could escape the War by making their way to the Swiss border.
