In the 1956 Western film Gun for a Coward, we follow the story of a family who has just lost their father. Will Keough (played by Fred MacMurray) is the eldest son and is now responsible for the family's ranch. However, Will is also a coward and is unable to take on the responsibility of the ranch and the safety of his family. Will's brother, Bless (played by Jeffrey Hunter), on the other hand, is the complete opposite of Will. He is brave, strong, and willing to do whatever it takes to protect his family. Bless takes over the role of the family's protector, which creates tension between him and Will.

To make matters worse, a group of outlaws led by Rafe (played by Dean Stockwell) starts to terrorize the town and the family's ranch. Will and Bless must put their differences aside and work together to protect their family and their livelihood from the outlaws.

Along the way, Bless falls in love with Aud Noland (played by Janice Rule), who is the daughter of one of the most powerful men in the town. Despite the obstacles in their relationship, including Aud's father's disapproval of her being with Bless, the two continue to pursue their love for each other.

Gun for a Coward tackles a lot of themes such as facing one's fears, family dynamics, and romantic relationships. The film also has a strong emphasis on the importance of bravery and standing up for oneself and one's family.

Fred MacMurray gives a compelling performance as Will, the cowardly older brother. He perfectly captures the fear and anxiety that Will feels about taking on the role of the family's protector. Jeffrey Hunter also does an excellent job as Bless, the brave younger brother. Hunter's portrayal of Bless as a strong and determined character is convincing and memorable.

Janice Rule's performance as Aud adds a romantic element to the film. Although Aud's character is not as developed as the two brothers, Rule does a fantastic job of bringing her character to life.

The film's cinematography also deserves a mention. The movie was filmed in Technicolor, which adds a unique and vibrant look to the Western landscape. The film's locations and sets are also visually stunning and add to the overall atmosphere of the movie.

Gun for a Coward is not your typical Western film. It delves deeper into the characters' relationships and emotions, making it a more complex and engaging movie. The film's themes still hold relevance today, making it a timeless classic that Western and non-Western movie fans alike can enjoy.

Overall, Gun for a Coward is a well-made Western film that highlights the importance of family, bravery, and love. It is a movie that should not be missed by fans of the genre and serves as a reminder of the timeless appeal of Western movies.

Gun for a Coward is a 1957 western with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.0.
