Gehenna is a psychological horror movie that brings to life the dark reality of the past. The plot centers around five individuals who travel to the Pacific Island, Saipan, to assess a rich businessman's abandoned land, rumored to be cursed. The team comprises of Paulina (Eva Swan), a feisty and unscrupulous real estate developer, Tyler (Justin Gordon), the project architect, Alan (Matthew Hegstrom), the PA, and Pepe (Sean Sprawling), their local guide.

Upon arriving on the island, they discover that the place is covered in dense vegetation, and the only way to get to the businessman's land is through a dense jungle filled with traps and mysterious markings. Pepe, who is somewhat cautious of going any further, warns the team of the island's dark past and its cursed history. He tells them of an urban legend involving a group of Japanese soldiers that defended the island during WW2.

Despite Pepe's warnings, the team forges ahead and arrives at the businessman's abandoned land, which is laden with creepy mannequins, abandoned buildings, and a foul smell that lingers in the air. The team starts to explore the surroundings, and strange things begin to happen. Alan goes missing, and a search for him leads the team to discover an underground bunker. As they delve deeper, they realize that whatever happened on this island during WW2 is far more malevolent than they could have ever imagined.

The team enters a dark and gruesome world, where they start to experience visions of their past traumas. They are haunted by the dead soldiers whose spirits still linger on the island, and their mental states slowly disintegrate under the weight of the horrors they experience. Desperate to find their way out, the team discovers that the businessman they were sent to assess is hiding a deadly secret that he is willing to kill for.

Gehenna strikes a chord as it asks the question of whether history could haunt us or if there is something inherently evil about the places we inhabit. The movie explores themes of guilt, trauma, and revenge, and as the team's sanity starts to unravel, it's hard not to question whether the island is cursed or if it's just the manifestation of the characters' inner demons.

Eva Swan's portrayal of Paulina is particularly impressive. She brings levity to the group dynamics, but it's clear that underneath the tough exterior lies a woman haunted by guilt and trauma. Her interactions with Tyler (Justin Gordon) are particularly noteworthy as the two explore their feelings towards each other amidst the horrors they experience. Simon Phillips, who plays the businessman, is disturbingly haunting and brings to life the island's wicked past in a way that makes it hard to shake off long after watching the movie.

The director, Hiroshi Katagiri, does an excellent job of creating an unsettling atmosphere that slowly builds throughout the movie. His use of cinematic tools such as lighting and sound create a sense of unease that keeps the audience on edge. It's also worth mentioning that the movie's special effects are particularly impressive, adding to the horror of the scenes presented.

Overall, Gehenna is a must-watch for anyone who loves psychological horror movies. It delivers a thrilling story that explores the complexities of human emotion and the horrors that can come from our own psyche. The casting is top-notch, and the direction and special effects make it a must-watch for anyone looking for a movie that will leave them disturbed long after the credits have rolled.

Gehenna is a 2018 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes.
