Earworm is a thrilling horror movie released in 2018, starring Madison Wilson, Caite Leger, Jordin Jones, and Erica Weiss. The movie revolves around the life of Casey, a young musician who is plagued by a bizarre phenomenon; whenever she hums a tune, it gets stuck in her head and doesn't go away. This is not a simple case of an earworm; the tune seems to become a living force and talks to her, forcing her to do terrible things.
The movie begins when Casey is given the opportunity of a lifetime. A well-known music producer agrees to help her record her first album, but only if she can come up with original lyrics within a few days. Casey is ecstatic, but exhausted from the pressure of the last few months, and the deadline seems impossible. That's when she remembers a tune her grandmother used to sing to her - one that she had always loved. She hums it absentmindedly and unknowingly unleashes a bizarre and sinister force into her life.
At first, Casey doesn't realize what's happening. She's busy working on her lyrics, and the tune is catchy, after all. It's only when she starts hearing it in the world around her that she begins to suspect that something is wrong. The tune begins to manipulate her thoughts and emotions, making her act out of character in disturbing and violent ways. Her friends and colleagues start to notice a change in her behavior, and Casey feels like she's losing control.
The members of her studio, including her best friend, Lauren, a sound engineer, and a web designer start to suspect something isn't right, as Casey's behavior becomes erratic, and her sleep patterns become almost non-existent. While attempting to flesh out more lyrics, Casey comes up with the perfect song, but it's not her own. The sinister earworm has suddenly taken control over her creativity nurturing her with the secret of becoming a renowned musician. Casey begins to see a vision - a woman venturing through an abandoned building seeking a door concealing the truth that could cure her of her hearing senses.
As Casey's mental health deteriorates, the group is forced to find a solution to rid her of the curse of the earworm, with a psychiatrist and sound therapy, but without success. Casey has become almost obsessed with the tune, unable to let it go or continue working with it clinging onto the hope that it's responsible for her musical genius. Suddenly it becomes apparent that Casey's condition is much more dangerous than anyone thought, and they must act fast before it's too late.
The filmmakers' use of sound editing must be commended for being crucial in contributing to the storyline. For a movie that centers on a song that gets stuck in your head, it messes with the audience's sense of hearing, making it felt to anyone who dared to watch. Full credits go to the cast, who delivered outstanding acting performances, synchronizing with the tone set for the movie.
In conclusion, Earworm is a unique movie, with excellent cinematography, sound, and acting. The storyline, while weird and unsettling, draws the audience in and keeps them hooked until the end. The suspense is masterfully handled, creating a palpable sense of unease that will leave you with a long-lasting impact. If you're a fan of music or horror, this is the movie for you. I highly recommend it.
