Down to Earth is a heartwarming comedy-drama film released in 2001. The movie is directed by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz and is a remake of the 1978 American film, Heaven Can Wait. The story follows a talented and self-absorbed African American comedian named Lance Barton, played by Chris Rock, who dies too soon and is given a rare chance to come back to life by inhabiting the body of a rich, white businessman named Charles Wellington.
Lance's journey begins when he dies in a car accident while speeding to a show. He finds himself in heaven and is excited to hear that he has been granted entrance after performing numerous good deeds throughout his life. However, he soon realizes that his untimely death was a mistake, and he's not quite ready to leave the world yet.
In a comedic twist, Lance is given the choice to come back to earth but in a different body than his own. He is hesitant at first but eventually settles on the body of Charles Wellington, a wealthy businessman who was coincidentally also in a coma following a freak accident. Lance's transition back to earth proves to be a bumpy ride, as he adjusts to his new life and struggles to convince those closest to Charles that he is, in fact, alive in his body.
Inhabiting Charles' body, Lance faces various challenges, including adapting to the wealthy businessman's lifestyle and handling his business dealings, all while trying to figure out how to get back to his old life. The comedy arises from the stark differences between the two men - their backgrounds, mannerisms, and worldviews.
As Lance makes progress in his new life, he meets Sontee, played by Regina King, who is working as a community organizer in a poor neighborhood. He is immediately attracted to her and becomes invested in her cause - to save the local hospital that's on the verge of closing down. Sontee is initially unaware of his true identity but falls for him regardless.
Lance also reconnects with fellow comedian and friend, Whitney, played by Jennifer Coolidge, who is oblivious to the fact that Lance is now in a different body. Whitney takes every opportunity to flirt with Lance, which adds to the humor in the movie.
The film explores themes of identity, the importance of altruism and doing good in the world, and, above all, the power of love. Through his experiences as Charles, Lance learns the value of money and power, but also the necessity of humility and kindness.
The cast of Down to Earth is exceptional, with Chris Rock delivering a standout performance as Lance/Charles. Regina King also shines as Sontee, bringing depth and complexity to her role. Jennifer Coolidge's Whitney provides comedic relief, and Mark Addy, Eugene Levy, and Frankie Faison playing supporting roles, all give strong performances.
Overall, Down to Earth is a charming and heartwarming comedy-drama that will make you laugh, cry and reflect on the value of life. The film's direction, cinematography, and soundtrack further add to the overall experience, making it a must-watch for all movie lovers.
Down to Earth is a 2017 documentary with a runtime of 51 minutes.
