The film was a commercial blockbuster and is regarded as one of the best Telugu films of the 1990s. Donga Donga is a tale of love, betrayal, and revenge, with an interesting plot, great music, and brilliant performances.
The film starts with the introduction of two friends, Harini (Heera Rajgopal) and Deva (Prashanth), who are thieves by profession. They lead a carefree life, steal from the rich and enjoy life to the fullest. One day, they end up stealing a car owned by a gangster Anji (Salim Ghouse), and inside the car, they find a cache of diamonds. Upon realizing their value, the friends decide to sell the diamonds and start a new life. They approach a jeweler, who agrees to buy the diamonds for a huge sum but later double-crosses them and tries to kill them both.
In a bid to escape from the jeweler, Harini and Deva jump into a truck, which is heading to Chennai. In the truck, they meet Ravi (Anand), a young and charming guy who is on his way to Chennai to attend his sister's wedding. Harini, who is scared and feels safe with Ravi's presence, convinces Deva to join Ravi's family in Chennai to escape from the gangster's clutches.
Upon reaching Chennai, Ravi introduces his family to Harini and Deva. Harini falls in love with Ravi, and they both start to get close. However, Deva's suspicious activities and the gangster's pursuit start to cause rifts in their lives. The gangster is not ready to let go of his diamonds, and he is hot on their trail. The rest of the film revolves around how Harini, Deva, and Ravi work together to escape from the gangster's clutches before it's too late.
One of the striking aspects of the movie is the excellent performances by the lead actors. Heera Rajgopal looks beautiful and delivers a stunning performance as Harini. Her chemistry with Prashanth and Anand is impeccable, and she adds the right amount of vulnerability and charm to her character. Anand, who makes his debut with this film, steals the show with his endearing portrayal of Ravi. He brings a sense of innocence and honesty to his character, making him instantly likable to the audience. Prashanth, who is known for his boy-next-door looks, gives a convincing performance as the street-smart thief Deva.
The film's biggest highlight is its music, composed by the legendary A.R. Rahman. The songs and background score elevated the film's narrative, adding to its mood and emotion. The songs "Sundari" and "Vennela" became a rage among music lovers and are popular to this day.
