Watch Crime and Punishment

This 2007 award-winning documentary by Zhao Liang explores the role of cops in a North Korean Border town. Viewed superficially, it looks much like many American cop shows, but the relationship between the Chinese military police and the people that they are supposed to be protected and serving is much different. This insightful documentary closely follows the lives of these military police as they commit acts in the name of safety and peace without flinching or pausing to notice they are being filmed that most people could hardly stand to watch, let alone participate in. This harrowing and gut wrenching documentary demonstrates a harsh reality.
