In the small town of Libertyville, Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) is an outcast high school student with a passion for cars. One day, he discovers a rusted-out 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine and becomes fixated on restoring it to its former glory. As Arnie obsesses over Christine, his relationship with his best friend Dennis (John Stockwell) deteriorates and he catches the eye of Leigh Cabot (Alexandra Paul), a girl from school who becomes romantically involved with him. But as Arnie's obsession with Christine grows, he becomes increasingly possessive of the car and starts to change in disturbing ways.
As the restored Christine begins to show a life of her own, people in the town start to die in bizarre, car-related accidents. Dennis and Leigh must come together to stop the homicidal car before it's too late.
Based on the novel by Stephen King, Christine is a suspenseful horror movie with a unique twist on the classic "killer car" trope. Keith Gordon gives an impressive performance as Arnie, portraying the character's descent into madness with nuance and subtlety. John Stockwell as Dennis is the perfect foil to Arnie's manic energy, and Alexandra Paul brings a likable vulnerability to Leigh.
What sets Christine apart from other horror movies is its focus on character development. Arnie is not just a one-dimensional antagonist, but a complex protagonist whose actions are driven by his own insecurities and desire for acceptance. This makes the film's climax all the more poignant as we see how Arnie's obsession with Christine has ultimately led to his undoing.
Another standout element of Christine is its stunning visuals. Director John Carpenter masterfully captures the 1980s small-town Americana aesthetic, and the titular car is a beautiful blend of vintage nostalgia and menacing menace. The practical effects used to bring Christine to life are still impressive today, and the use of lighting and color helps create a moody, atmospheric tone that permeates the film.
Overall, Christine is a classic horror movie that has stood the test of time. It's a suspenseful, character-driven tale that combines elements of classic King horror with Carpenter's signature visual style. Whether you're a fan of the genre or just looking for a good scare, Christine is a must-watch.
