Watch Before Winter Comes

Austria, 1945--a stiff-necked British Army Major (David Niven) is in charge of displaced persons in a camp with the loyal assistance of a multilingual refugee named Janovic (Topol). When the British area commander, Brigadier Bewley (Anthony Quayle), learns that Janovic is suspected of being a Russian Army deserter, he orders Burnside to turn him over to the Russians. But the Major's young aide Lt. Pilkington (John Hurt), reminds Burnside of Janovic's efforts and tries to prevent him from turning the interpreter in to the Soviets.
