Black bears are able to maintain a metabolism just slightly lower than normal during hibernation, reducing their body temperature by about 5 degrees Celsius. This gentle torpor means that the bears can be instantly awake and alert. During their seven months of rest bears will stay at a relatively high body temperature, turn their urine to protein that can strengthen their body tissue, and they don't age. One plasma has been discovered in bears blood that acts as the control switch for their hibernation, it has been named HIT - Hibernation Induction Trigger. The extraordinary characteristics of bear hibernation has lead a team of scientists from numerous institutions to mount a series of experiments to isolate the HIT plasma and explore its potential use in the treatment of a variety of human conditions, from medical procedures to the realms of space exploration. We will follow the scientists in their state of the art pursuit.
